NEW OR SECOND HAND?

This is a question that lots of new mommies ask, “should I purchase new cloth nappies or is it ok to buy second-hand?” – let’s take a look at the pros and cons!

As an individual who highly values sustainability, I always promote the purchasing of second-hand items where and when possible! I myself bought a large second-hand stash when I started purchasing cloth nappies for my first born in 2016. I’ve gotten fantastic deals as well as complete duds! These are just a few of the pros, cons, tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.

NEW CLOTH NAPPIES

PRO: you know their history

Because you have purchased new nappies you never have to wonder how long they will last or how well they were cared for. The waterproofing and inserts will be ready to go the long haul – at least 2-3 children! Not to mention most suppliers will grant full refunds should anything be amiss.

CON: can be a pricey outlay

New cloth is expensive. But if you are having more than one child it is definitely worth the investment (and peace of mind).

PRO: higher resale value

Because you purchased first hand and know how well they have been cared for you can retain a much higher resale value too! Win, win!

SECOND-HAND CLOTH NAPPIES

PRO: they are so much more affordable

Obviously, this is such a drawcard! If you are only using them for 1 child or if you have decided to go cloth during baba’s second year, second hand is a great and affordable option.

CON: buying before using

You never know what you are actually going to get until you use it. Most second hand nappies are sold via Facebook and it can be risky if you don’t personally know the buyer. Photos can be deceiving and there are no guarantees unfortunately.

PRO: you can try many different types and brands at a fraction of the cost

I personally did this with my first child to test fit – this worked so well as I then bought new nappies from the preloved ones that I loved too!

PRO: purchasing second-hand is far more sustainable than new!

As an environmentally concerned company first, we back this! So make sure you consider all your options before purchasing. We want conscious consumers!

SOME TIPS FOR PURCHASING SECOND HAND:

  • Insist on photos which are clear and close up of all inserts and PUL
  • Ask about wash routine, how many months used and how many nappies were in the stash for that child
  • Ask WHY the person is selling. Bad fit? Not using? Etc

Buying second-hand nappies can be risky, but can also be totally worth it! Weigh up your options and your budget and go from there!

What are some lessons you’ve learnt along the way?

Much fluffy love,
